French iOS hacker Pod2g has always been keen to keep his followers updated on the happenings in the world of jailbreaking. He came up with the answers for a few critical questions on the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak, which he had received either by email or Twitter.
Last week, Pod2g announced via Twitter that he had managed to run the iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on the new iPad. He said that he was "stabilizing the payload" method and once he was done with that, he would try to jailbreak the new iPad on iOS 5.1.1, which is the most recent version of iOS released till date.
On top of that piece of information, yet another update surfaced straight from the horse's mouth later on Monday. In a latest post on his blog, Pod2g mentioned that the process to make the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak a user friendly tool is still going on and a release could be expected "in a couple of weeks."
Apart from the possible release time frame, Pod2g shared some key information about the 5.1.x untethered jailbreak. Here's what Pod2g had to say:
"I receive lots of questions either by email or twitter about the 5.1.x untethered jailbreak.
Here are some answers:
- The poll about releasing now or waiting for 6.0 ended with a 64% / 33% to release ASAP. Where is the link? ETA? How much % done? etc.
As I said earlier in twitter, there's still a lot to do to have a user friendly and well tested tool to install the jailbreak on end users devices. Expect a release in a couple of weeks.
- Will it be compatible with my ( )?
It will be compatible with any device running iOS 5.1.1 except iPod 3G, iPhone 3Gs and ATV3 (right now, may change in the near future, nobody knows).
- Why is it so slow to release now that the iPad 3,1 has been demoed?
There are 16 different devices out there to work on and to test. It takes time.
No, sorry. Only really trusted people (that can be counted on one hand) could have access to the jailbreak. I don't want any leak to happen.
- What if I offer you 1,000,000$?
That doesn't change a thing."
According to Redmond Pie, although the requirements needed to produce a functioning jailbreak are available, Pod2g said that packaging it as a user-friendly tool would take some time and it also needs to be tested thoroughly.
However, the hacker has confirmed that the upcoming 5.1.1 jailbreak will support devices like the iPhone 4S/4, iPod touch 4 and the second-gen Apple TV running on iOS 5.1.1. He also announced on Tuesday that his untethered exploit would also work on both first and second generation iPads, in addition to the new third generation iPad.
"iPad1,1 and iPad2,1 tested with iOS 5.1.1. Untethering worked," Pod2g tweeted.
The only devices that look to be out of luck for now in receiving the next iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak are the latest third-gen Apple TV, the iPhone 3GS and the third-gen iPod touch.
Will It Be Released "At Hack In The Box" Security Conference?
While the entire jailbreak community is eagerly awaiting the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release, iDownloadBlog came up with an interesting report suggesting that the upcoming "Hack In The Box" (HITB) security conference in Amsterdam could unwrap the highly anticipated jailbreak tool.
The report pointed out to a blog post by Pod2g, in which he shared some interesting information regarding the security conference. He said:
"It's like something big's going to happen at HITB related to jailbreaking: look at this.
No more to say ;-)"
The link, provided by Pod2g, leads to a tweet from none other than the official Chronic Dev Team Twitter account. The tweet reads like this:
"Ready for some jailbreak goodness? We are :) #HITB2012AMS registrations close soon http://conference.hitb.org/hitbsecconf201..."
According to iDownloadBlog, while it's possible that this could end up being nothing, it does seem like something big related to jailbreaking might be on its way. "And what's bigger than the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak at the moment?"
The HITB security conference is scheduled between May 21 and May 25. It will reportedly feature different speakers and would be backed by high profile sponsors like Microsoft, Google and RIM.
